Plan for the Siesta if Traveling to Spain

By Chadwick Thurston Iii

The first time I went to Spain I was 22 years old and flying by the seat of my pants. I had studied Spanish and thought I knew the culture. One very big cultural phenomenon tripped me up upon arrival: the siesta.

I had never flown overseas before that trip and was not really prepared for the jet lag. In fact, lack of preparation could have been my middle name. I hadn't made a hotel reservation either, and my backpack was way too full.

That wouldn't have been a huge problem except the plane landed at around 2:00 p.m., right at the start of the siesta. I ventured into Madrid, a massive city that I did not know, looking for a pension where I could crash. The problem was, all the pensions were closed up for the afternoon. Most of the hotels were, too.

Fortune smiled on me, and I bumped into a group of students whom I had met on the train. What were the odds! They could see that I was a bit bedraggled (Did I mention that it was almost 100 degrees that day?) and invited me to their dorm. Spanish hospitality impressed me -- the dorm chief let me have a room for a whole week even though I wasn't part of the group. It cost me about $5 a night -- score!

So I got to my room and took a nap. It was delicious. Since then, I have tried to take a nap every chance I got. It turns out that the afternoon nap makes a lot of sense. Your blood sugar drops after lunch so you feel tired, and it is the hottest part of the day.

I'm glad that I learned about the siesta, and I am even glad that I did it the adventurous way.

Thank you for sharing this story, Chadwick.
Many people don't realize that a 20 minute nap is more invigerating then a 4 hour sleep.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes. Frederick
